Instructional activities
Demonstrate/Model (if appropriate)
-draw ones/tens/hundreds/thousands place value and model 4 digit addition with only the place value disks (4567+4535) –ask the students how to add and write it vertically
-model another four digit addition with the disks and the standard addition form. Show where the disks correspond to the steps in the standard form (1266+2355 and 3589+2443)
-model in standard form only (4396+2895)

Guided Practice (if appropriate)
-instruct students to take out paper and work out problems with me as I do them on the board (3614+5327 and 2378+2534) have students tell me each step as they do the steps on their paper

Independent Practice (if appropriate)
-p. 48-49 in math w.b. finish for homework if not completed. (rotate and check while students are working independently)
-model addition with the placement disks, using the standard form, and also using these two techniques together.

-during the rotate and check if students are still struggling advise them to take out a piece of notebook paper, turn it sideways and write the problems, adding them on there
-pull a small group and allow them to use number disk if still not grasping
-placement disks
-math workbooks
-verbal

-visual during the rotate and check

- mastery grade from h.w.

Review and Closure
-Recap adding with four digits, emphasize digits 1-9 can be in each place value colulmn
